Spring Community Meeting 2001
"Living Better Longer: Practical Tips for Healthy Aging" Featuring Hermien Lee, R.D. Jon Pynoos, Ph.D. Art Linkletter On April 4, the Center held its Spring Meeting at the Peterson Automotive Museumin Los Angeles. Over 350 people attended the meeting which addressed "Living Better Longer: Practical Tips for Healthy Aging." Hermien Lee, R.D., M.S., 84 years old and a practicing nutritional consultant, began the session with a presentation on "nutritional guidelines for healthy eating." She encouraged attendees to increase their intake of vegetables, especially colorful varieties, and to eat a balanced diet broken into small meals throughout the day. Dr. Jon Pynoos, Professor of Gerontology, Public Policy and Urban Planning at USC, shared tips on making the home a safer place. He stressed the placement of handrails near all stairs, and the marking of steps and other obstacles to increase their visibility. These and other simple steps can help older adults avoid accidents, rather than deal with the stress of recovering from accident-related injuries. Closing the session was veteran entertainer and senior advocate Art Linkletter. With his usual charm and engaging manner, Mr. Linkletter encouraged the audience to stay involved in life, friends and family, to protect their health through regular exercise, and to keep their sense of humor. |
